How deep should substrate be in a tortoise enclosure?

Substrate depth should allow natural digging and burrowing behavior. For most species, at least 3–6 inches of suitable substrate supports comfort and humidity control. Some tortoises prefer deeper areas for partial burrowing. Shallow substrate can limit natural movement and increase stress.
